RP SMACK
Jungle / Drum & Bass
Ripe Productions • Jungle Ting
Roger "RP Smack" Pedraza is widely recognized as one of the pioneering figures of Chicago's underground dance music movement and among the earliest promoters of Jungle/Drum & Bass in the United States. Beginning in 1992, when Chicago's electronic music identity was still dominated by House and Techno, RP helped introduce and establish the emerging sounds of Jungle throughout the Midwest.
Through Ripe Productions and Jungle Ting, he produced a groundbreaking series of warehouse events and large-scale raves that connected Chicago to the rapidly evolving UK and Toronto Jungle scenes. His events showcased many of the world's most influential DJs and live acts while providing an early platform for Midwest talent, helping cultivate one of North America's first dedicated Jungle communities.
Beyond music, RP recognized that underground culture extended into art, fashion, and identity. In 1992, Fresh Jive founder Rick Klotz designed the original Mindride artwork, merging Southern California streetwear aesthetics with RP's now-iconic Ripe B-Boy logo—an early example of the crossover between fashion, visual art, and underground electronic music culture.
RP's approach to promotion was equally shaped by his background in political activism. During his time at Malcolm X College and Columbia College Chicago, he developed a belief that music could build community across racial, cultural, and social boundaries. Those ideals naturally aligned with the multicultural roots of Jungle and Drum & Bass.
As RP explains:
"Our mid-to-late '80s crew, TSU, was deeply immersed in collecting and playing early Hip-Hop, all the Dub, Funk and Jazz giants, and Industrial music found at Wax Trax and Dr. Wax on Clark. So in 1992, that musical foundation, my political activism, and my production studies all converged at the right moment—each fueling the other, and Ripe Productions was born."
The Ripe Productions events documented below represent a remarkable cross-section of electronic music history. Long before many of these artists became internationally recognized, RP was presenting them alongside established innovators, helping expose Chicago audiences to new sounds as they emerged around the world.
As pioneering Jungle Chicago promoter Dubshack later wrote:
"The earliest in any scene are without a doubt the most important, but in many cases the most overlooked. The events below are only a start to the many events that Roger presented. He was a pioneer to the warehouse rave in Chicago and the first to bring Jungle to our town. No one man was more in tune (or took such huge chances) as Roger to pursue such a love for Jungle. We couldn't believe what he was doing (after returning from a vacation in London) but were the beneficiaries of his passion and determination to expose people to the new music at the same time it was breaking in the UK. A true pioneer!
But when you look at the RIPE events below, don't just look at the Jungle artists. Look at all the artists. These events are a who's who of many of the most influential dance music artists of our time. RIPE had a huge vision and put on incredible events. Chicago history cannot be written without his huge contribution."
Today, more than three decades after founding Ripe Productions, RP continues to DJ, produce events, release music, mentor emerging artists, and preserve the history of Chicago's underground scene. His work remains driven by the same principles that inspired Ripe Productions from the beginning: community, innovation, cultural exchange, and an unwavering commitment to the underground.
The following events represent a selection of landmark productions presented by Ripe Productions during the formative years of Chicago's underground electronic music scene. Together they document the early development of Jungle/Drum & Bass in the Midwest while reflecting the diversity of artists who helped shape electronic music culture during the era.

Respect to everyone listening around the world. This is RP Smack from Chicago, founder of Ripe Productions and Jungle Ting. Thanks to IONZ.FM for the invitation. Keep supporting underground music, support your local crews, and remember... scenes aren't given—they're built. Peace.

Eric Ross is an underground wizard in the music industry—an artist, DJ, producer, and promoter known for his ability to bring raw energy and underground culture to the masses.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Eric developed his sound while living in New York. From the hustle of the Manhattan underground scene to the electro and hip-hop street vibe brought by Frankie Bones and Adam X, and the loft parties curated by Keoki himself, these deep East Coast roots built the foundation for his musical taste. His university days took him to the Windy City, where he cultivated a versatile, fiercely non-commercial style infused with Chicago's underground house scene. His approach to music is about creating immersive experiences to move people physically, emotionally, and mentally.
After 20 years in Chicago, Eric embarked on his next adventure to Los Angeles, where he launched his underground label, I Love Sundaze. Submerging himself in the Los Angeles warehouse scene, he brought his unique textures of techno and house to the City of Angels, growing further as an artist while absorbing West Coast flavor. Most recently, he returned to the Midwest to continue building upon his creativity, influenced by the Detroit energy of techno and minimal, getting back to the roots of the genre with the guidance of the Detroit techno scene.
The music lab is where Eric spends most of his time when he is not out DJing. The studio is his main focus as he moves into the next phase of his career. With over 100 digital releases and a few vinyl pressings, Eric is dedicated to pushing his underground label to the limits of sound across techno, acid house, house, and Electro Tek. Moving away from the digital space and returning to vinyl, he aims to bring joy to underground heads worldwide.
